Interestingly enough, I get this same error from Google Calendar when trying to read the automated event e-mail it sends to my Google Apps account.

This message cannot be displayed because of the way it is formatted. Ask the sender to send it again using a different format or email program.

I get this same message on my iPod touch fairly often when reading email offline. Offline seems to be a large part of the problem though - the same message can be read fine when online. And the first sentence or so of the message can tantalisingly be read in the list view. So it seems that the message doesn't actually mean what it says - at least in some cases... Combined with the fact that it doesn't automatically check IMAP folders for new messages this makes it fairly useless for what I bought it for (dealing with my email offline while commuting).
