so after a lot of complaining about the iphone and some of its deficiencies (summarized on the iphone to do list), it is time to say something positive about it. and there are many positive things to say about the iphone, but it is a bit boring to actually list all of them after months of excited pre-release press buzz and the continuing excitement that happens right now.
instead of going into details, just for the record i want to say that i have an iphone, i like my iphone, i use my iphone, and i am sure that a substantial number of the minor flaws will be fixed with the first or second set of patches.
and apart from using and liking it as my personal mobile internet terminal, i also hope to see it being used as a platform for web-based mobile services (and very soon hopefully location-based services as well), and i will certainly use it as a very hip and very instructional example for this fall's web architecture course at the uc berkeley school of information. furthermore, we decided to use it as an example platform for the ischool's information and service design program, which i think will give us a very interesting and future-oriented perspective of how to deal with information and services.
part of my complaining about the iphone is caused by the fact that i think it is a great device with a lot of potential, and some of the minor deficiencies could be fixed pretty easily. but since apple has a very closed approach to their software and their services, you always have to wait for them to have something happening. so i am sure they will listen to the market and continue to improve the iphone, and i hope that they will address at least some of the issues which are interesting for me.
in conclusion: the iphone is too good to not complain about it.
