firefox 3 has been released today. it is still slowish and quite a memory hog, when compared to really nimble browsers such as opera, but compared to firefox 2, it is a substantial improvement. and it finally does proper image dithering for scaled images, which for most people probably is a very minor thing, but for me always was really annoying, because i am using scaled images all the time...
and of course there are many other improvements, some of them major, some of them minor. i am looking forward to playing around with it, this blog post is the last thing i will be doing in good old firefox 2.
hmmm. a little note from just after the update: add-ons are a problem. i have about 15 of them, and most of them did not update. luckily, autohide, go up, live HTTP headers, and operator did update, but there is no update for cmSiteNavigation, greasemonkey (which i find really surprising), and tab mix plus. but i guess these things will be sorted out very soon, and the add-ons i use most (with the exception of tab mix plus) are already available.
the one thing i will definitely miss most is cmSiteNavigation, and i really hope it will be made available soon. unfortunately, the author of this extension (christoph müller) does no longer develop it, but i hope that there is some user community out there and that somebody will take over. in an ideal world, something like that would be built into the browser (opera does it), but i guess we have to wait for firefox 4 for that one...
